The beginning: A tiny stimulus triggers a natural wonder
At the beginning of every pearl is something small and unspectacular: a tiny foreign body inside the shell. This can be a grain of sand, a small piece of tissue, or a microorganism. In the case of cultured pearls, this process is deliberately initiated by inserting a small mother-of-pearl nucleus. The mussel perceives this foreign body as a disturbance and initiates its natural protective response.
The shell begins to work—layer by layer
To encapsulate the foreign object, the shell produces mother-of-pearl, also known as “nacre.” This material consists of extremely fine aragonite crystals held together by a natural binding agent. The shellfish deposits this mother-of-pearl in wafer-thin layers around the foreign object – day after day, month after month, sometimes over years.
The more layers are created, the smoother, rounder, and more intense the famous luster becomes, giving pearls their unmistakable shine. The fascinating depth of this shine is something that cannot be artificially replicated by industrial manufacturing.
Natural vs. cultured pearls – only the beginning is different
Although natural and cultured pearls are often seen as opposites, they only differ in the first step. The only difference between natural and cultured pearls:
- Natural pearls are formed randomly, without human intervention.
- Cultured pearls are created by deliberately inserting a small nucleus (e.g., a small piece of mother-of-pearl).
However, the rest of the process is 100% natural.
That is why cultured pearls are also considered real pearls – with real mother-of-pearl and real luster.
Cultivation farms also ensure optimal conditions in the water, because only healthy mussels produce high-quality pearl luster. Sustainability is playing an increasingly important role in this, as mussels are very sensitive to environmental changes.
Growth period: Why patience is everything
Depending on the type of shell and environment, pearls take different amounts of time to grow. Akoya pearls are often ready after around a year, while South Sea pearls can take up to four years. Every pearl that sees the light of day is therefore a true test of nature's patience.
- Akoya pearls: 10–18 months
- South Sea pearls: 2–4 years
- Tahitian pearls: 18–24 months
- Freshwater pearls: 6–24 months
The longer the growth period, the thicker the layer of mother-of-pearl—and the higher the quality of the luster.
Why no two pearls are alike
Even under identical conditions, each pearl will be slightly different. Differences arise due to:
- slight movements of the shell
- temperature and water conditions
- nutrient content
- the “temperament” of the mussel
- shape of the core used
That is why there are round, oval, teardrop-shaped, and baroque pearls, which look particularly unique. Round pearls are the rarest, which is why they are also the most sought-after.
The play of colors in nature
Pearls shimmer in many shades. Their iridescence is caused by light refraction in the fine layers of mother-of-pearl, bringing the surface to life. No color is “better” than another—each shell creates its own unique signature.

- White
- Rosé
- Creme
- Silver
- Gold
- Anthracite
- Green
- Peacock colors (Tahiti)
